Chapter 13

For their three-month anniversary, they both had a few surprises up their sleeves.

Lisa hopped out of her Uber wearing one of the most modestly scandalous outfits Raquel had ever beheld. The woman was clad in a sheer wrap-dress (not quite as sheer as the maxi dress she wore around Raquel’s apartment, but damn close) speckled in black roses with red outlines around the petals. Beneath the barely-there exterior was a black tube top and matching shorts that left absolutely nothing to the imagination about what she had tucked away beneath her underwear. I knew she had been using my building’s gym this summer, but holy shit. Someone had studied all the best ways to get a firm booty. Raquel cursed her own body for not getting with the program as it aged.

Black hoop earrings and rhinestone-studded sandals rounded out the ensemble. The earrings had been a gift from Raquel one month into their relationship. The sandals looked brand-new, although Lisa later admonished her girlfriend for never noticing the bling on her feet before. Honestly, Raquel felt so frumpy in her little black dress that she had half a mind to tell her girlfriend to take off the wrap-dress and share it for a while. She always calls me so fashionable, yet look at her! So little effort, and she’s ready to walk into a catalog. Lord, did they still make catalogs?

Lisa confessed that she didn’t know what to dress for, since Raquel had been so hush-hush about their plans for the day. Raquel had vied for a few new things to her own dating life, since making it three months with one of her younger girlfriends was something to celebrate. Yet Lisa had no way to anticipate a trip to the planetarium, complete with hands-on cosmic models and a blackhole VR simulator. The highlight was, of course, the light show at the end of the tour. The soundtrack was a popular electronic pop album from the ‘80s, which was nostalgic to Raquel and trendy to Lisa. The show was sold out, and Raquel thanked her lucky stars (including all the ones she saw during the show) that she bought the tickets a month ago.

“I feel like a kid again!” Lisa said upon exiting the planetarium. “I mean that in the best way.” She offered her girlfriend a kiss on the cheek and a skip in her step. “We doing anything next?”

Anything next? What, did she think Raquel burnt out all of her ideas in one go?

They had dinner on the river. Seriously. We’re on the river. A floating dock provided a seasonal dining experience that was more exclusive than the river cruises and required a two-month advanced reservation. Raquel had been that positive about her blossoming relationship with Lisa back when she made the reservations.

It was close enough to the start of autumn that twilight descended at the beginning of their dinner. The purple and oranges in the sky went beautifully with the candlelit meals. The server didn’t once call Raquel Lisa’s mother.
