Chapter Nine

Allegra sat patiently with Luigi as Apollo continued to paint. Secretly, she was pleased that Stephen had commissioned him to paint her.

“I am almost done,” her brother stated while grinning at her.

He had been working on the painting for the last six days. She had posed for him for an hour each day and she felt glad it was almost over. Allegra picked up her bow and began to play Vivaldi Andante Concerto in G Minor RV 417. It was slow and seductive and she could not help but to think of Stephen. She forgot about her brother, concentrating on the notes and then remembering her time with Stephen in the music room. She closed her eyes and she thought about the time she had spent in his room at Juniper Place.

She kept playing Vivaldi, thinking about Stephen and even though her arm was growing tired, she could not stop. Something was driving her and she knew she was falling in love with him, despite her reservations and knowing they could never truly be together, unless she took him up on his offer to be his mistress.

“I am done!”

Allegra opened her eyes and looked at her brother who quickly turned the painting around. She felt shocked at what she saw before her. She stared at what he had painted, totally amazed. She was playing Luigi with her head thrown back while wearing the burgundy gown she had worn when she had first met Stephen. She had only posed in it once, yet her brother had captured it on the canvas as if she had worn it each time she sat for him. Her eyes were closed and her lips were slightly parted in the painting and she appeared to be enjoying herself. The passion she felt as she played... obvious on her face.

“Do you think Lord Rye will like it?” Apollo asked turning it back around and giving it a critical eye.

Before she could answer, her father walked into the room. He looked from Allegra to Apollo and quickly walked over to his son. He glanced at the painting; his displeasure obvious. “Is this the painting you made for Lord Rye?”

Allegra could hear the anger in his voice and glanced at her brother.

“Yes sir,” Apollo said looking at his father confused by his obvious disapproval.

“Why did you paint your sister in such a scandalous way?”

“There is nothing scandalous about the painting,” Allegra argued, standing and setting Luigi down. Apollo painted it while I was playing.”

“I painted what I saw,” Apollo answered defensively. “I find nothing wrong with it.”

“Your sister looks wanton,” their father snapped, glaring at his son’s art.

“Maybe I look that way when I play,” Allegra pointed out. “It is not Apollo’s fault.”

“You are not going to give this to Lord Rye!” He reached for the painting.

Apollo quickly moved it from the easel.

“He has already paid me father, and I have spent half the money on paints and the canvas. I sent word to him that I should be done today, and he is coming by later to get it.
