Chapter Sixteen

Niva

The call ring wakes me. It reverberates through the whole building, so it’s coming from the emergency line.

I slam the silencer beside the bed to stop it from waking Graven, who’s sleeping beside me like the dead, then I dash into the hall to grab the vid receiver.

“Yeah?” I answer, my heart pounding, panicked that someone’s life is in danger back home. That’s what the emergency line is for.

“Niva!” My father’s loud voice and stressed face shine through the screen. “Thank the gods! Why haven’t you been answering your wrist com?”

I roll my eyes. “Because I took it off so I wouldn’t have to deal with nosy calls from anyone. Including you.”

“Oh…” He clears his throat and has the grace to look a bit embarrassed. “That makes sense.”

“So, there’s no emergency? Everyone at home is fine?” My heart rate calms, and I start to breathe normally.

“Everyone is fine; only we miss you. That’s all.”

I sigh with relief. “Good.”

“But there is something worrisome.” He leans closer to the screen. “When I couldn’t reach you, I checked the security camera system, and it’s not functioning. Perhaps I should send someone to fix it.”

“No,” I say a bit too fast. “I disabled it.” More like destroyed it, but I’ll admit that later.

“But why?”

“Privacy.”

“But why would you need privacy?” He says it like it’s a dirty word, and it almost is in our culture. It’s respected, but we’re all so open and honest with one another, whenever someone seeks too much privacy, there’s often the assumption the person has something guilty to hide. Which I do.

I shouldn’t have confessed to messing with the security system myself. I should’ve blamed it on a malfunction; now he’s suspicious of me. I have no experience hiding anything ever. I’m terrible at secrets.

“I needed a break from everyone. Why is that so hard to believe?” I snap angrily, getting nervous. Which is now obvious as my skin filters from my usual relaxed blue to traces of orange.

“Niva, what’s wrong? Did something happen? Did—”

“Nothing’s wrong! I just want to be left alone for once.” I sigh, trying to calm myself down, but it’s not working. Fear is brightening my skin.

“It’s all right, daughter.” He says in his most gentle, calming voice. “Perhaps the time alone hasn’t been good for you. Being by oneself for too long can be unhealthy, too. You can come home anytime. Or I could come get you.”

I breathe a sigh of relief that he suspects only that I’m stressed about being alone and not from being guilty—and fear of being found out for having a private sex retreat with a human. “Father, I’m fine. I—”

“Niva!” Graven calls from the other room.

I cringe. Fuck, damn. I open my eyes to see if my father heard it, the unmistakable human accent saying my name, his inability to create the Fellamana pitches that anyone else would use to pronounce it.

And he did. My father’s eyes widen in sheer alarm, and his skin flashes with bright orange. “Niva, you didn’t… Please tell me you didn’t take the human with you.
