Chapter 14

Liam

Cold.

For much longer than it should have, that was the only sensation that registered. Cold so sharp it burned, flooding his ears and his nose, tossing him until he could no longer tell which way was up. The water swept him along, keeping him submerged until his lungs began to burn.

When he had come to his father from Fresno, he had barely been able to stay afloat in the calm waters of a chlorinated pool. At the time, his father’s insistence on drilling him had felt like another oppressive attempt to change him, but he was thankful for it now.

He flailed, catching rocks with his feet and elbows, scrabbling at the slippery bottom with his hands. A jagged rock sliced open his palm, but he ignored the pain, grabbing the rock and hanging on by the fingernails to keep from getting tossed. He got his feet under him and shoved with all his might, breaking the surface with the tremendous gasp.

His head stung like hell, watery blood streaming into his eyes so heavily that he could barely see more than shape and the washed-out violet hues of approaching dusk. The frigid water leached strength from his limbs at alarming speed, and his teeth began to chatter so hard that he was afraid they might break.

“Liam!” The warmth came out of nowhere. Strong hands grabbed him, pulling him close, locking around his chest in an unbreakable hold and hauling him to shore.

“C’mon, baby, fight just a little harder for me.”

Griffin.

Somehow, he was always there when Liam needed him the most.

Always cursing, too.

Liam was too disoriented to make sense of his words, but he got the gist from the guttural rumble against the shell of his ear.

The river bottom rose up to meet them as they got close to shore, and Liam planted his feet and attempted to take some of his weight off Griffin. They staggered up the bank a few feet before Liam collapsed, vomiting river water into a clump of serrated grass. The river had carried them a few hundred feet away from the cabin, but it loomed ominously at he edge of his vision.

“No matter how many times I tell you…” Griffin grumbled, kneeling beside him and stripping off his wet flannel.

Liam was too miserable to even focus on Griffin’s sculpted abs or his sexy biceps, but he clutched the sodden fabric when Griffin wrapped his flannel around his shoulders and began chafing his arms. Soaked to the skin as they both were, it still managed to transfer enough heat to calm the shivers wracking his body like a seizure.

Griffin’s chest blazed like a furnace against his back, and Liam curled his shaking hands around the arms Griffin wrapped around his chest in a bear hug.

“Always… always here when I need you,” Liam mumbled, shooting for levity and failing when his clumsy tongue stuck on the words.

“Were you hit?” Griffin asked, glancing over his shoulder toward the shadow of the cabin before turning his attention back to Liam and cupping the side of his face in one large palm.
