Chapter Five

Splashing icy water on his face was a fairly effective way to make sure the few hours of sleep Rhys had got weren’t dogging him too much. Really, he coveted his bed, the duvet still warm from where he’d been burrowed in it just minutes before, but he wanted to get to work. He didn’t work Sundays, Toby took care of the Christmas tree sales by himself on Sundays, taking Mondays off instead, but Rhys was pretty sure Toby wouldn’t be making it in today.

He’d just pop in and see if Sylvia, the Sunday manager, needed any help. Rhys hadn’t planned anything else. Dinner with his mum could wait until tonight, so it wasn’t any skin off his nose working the extra shift. Of course, he needed to pick up his car anyway.

Biking in the snow wasn’t the most fun activity Rhys had ever tried. Each turn was precariously slippy, and slush was churned up by every passing car, no matter how slow they were going. It was beautiful out though, and that kind of made up for the lack of sleep and the icy chill penetrating him.

Snow fell softly, whitening the ungritted paths and grass verges. Trees were heavy with cottony-white boughs, and it really did look like a winter wonderland. What could be more appropriate than selling Christmas trees?

Rhys was actively trying to keep his mind off Toby or he might have thought a little more carefully before bursting into the shop and asking Sylvia if she needed anyone to cover the tree sales. Okay, bursting in may be a slight exaggeration, but it was kind of how he felt he’d arrived. He’d attached his bike to the bike rack on top of his car and knocked quietly at the locked shop door and explained to a shocked Sylvia that Toby might not be making it in today.

Rhys was mid-explanation when it dawned on him that maybe this wasn’t the best idea. Sure, his intentions were good; he only wanted to help Toby out. He knew it was maybe slightly out of order for the temp to start dictating what happened when the boss was away, but he was honestly only trying to be helpful. The road to hell, as they say, is paved with good intentions though.

It only occurred to him halfway through the conversation that he had no way of explaining how he knew about Toby’s dad before Toby had even called into work. Nobody would believe Toby had called the temp and not the manager, and letting the staff know he had spent the night at Toby’s was both gauche and uncalled for. He was about to spill beans on something that was not his place to spill. Well, sure, he was part of the equation, but he didn’t know what the rest of the staff knew about their boss’s private life.

“I was going to see if you needed an extra hand today. I know Toby can’t make it, his dad’s had an accident, and I know nobody else likes being outside.
