âYou didnât need to come. Or is it that you donât trust me?â
Helena Grant gazed at the snow-covered landscape surrounding them. âIâve worked with you for a long time, Alec. Of course I donât trust you. But thatâs not why I came.â
âNo?â
âAlec, weâve had three brutal and shocking murders here in less than a week. The Christmas break has enabled us to keep the detail out of the media so far but all hellâs going to break loose shortly. And someoneâs bound to notice Iâve been conspicuous by my absence.â
âI suppose you have a point. Hope itâs not wrecked your romantic weekend too much.â
âA decapitated corpse does tend to put a dampener on things. But, no, itâs fine. Iâve said Iâll go back there tonight and I was planning to head home tomorrow anyway. So Iâll do that and then come in.â
âYou still donât need to. I think youâre right about showing your face here, but nobody but me and the team will know youâre still on holiday tomorrow. Weâre not going to grass you up.â
âThatâs a less reassuring thought than you imagine. But I canât let something like this happen and stay away.â
They were standing outside Gordon Prebbleâs house. His driveway was filled with police and other vehicles, and the site was being fully sealed off. âAt least weâve got a proper crime scene,â McKay said. âDoesnât seem much doubt that the killing happened in situ.â
âThereâs no delicate way of asking this,â Grant said. âBut did they find the head?â
âIt wasnât exactly lost. The force of the blow or blows had knocked it into the corner of the room. But our witness wasnât exactly in a state to register that.â
âHow is she?â
âRecovering, I think. I left Ginny looking after her. Thought that might be more effective than trying to do it myself.â
âSound thinking, Alec. So who is this woman?â
âClaims she was here as his cleaner. Though Iâm a little unclear what sort of cleaner comes on Christmas Sunday or whatever weâre supposed to call today.â
âWhatâs she like?â
âYoung. Well, young by my standards, anyway, and even younger by Gordon Prebbleâs standards. Attractive.â
âYou think she was doing more than cleaning?â
âShe might just be a dab hand with a mop and feather duster. Just seems an odd time to come. But thatâs a question for later.â
âWe donât think sheâs a suspect?â
âI canât see it. For a start, thereâs no blood on her. Iâve left the scene to the examiners for the moment, but by all accounts thereâs not much of the room left untouched by blood splatters. Itâs hard to imagine that whoever did the deed wouldnât have been similarly covered. In any case, she seems genuinely traumatised by it.â
âSo what do we know about Gordon Prebble? The name rings a bell.â
âSo it should. Heâs another of our legitimate businessmen. Similar to Hamish Forres, though even murkier. Heâs another whoâs managed to avoid any formal dealings with us, but heâs come into our sights more than once. Including when we were looking into Donaldsonâs associates at the start of the year.
