Chapter Nine

Get Back to Work!

Fog rolled in the next day and Galhim turned a grimmer hue. The curtains of the bar lay closed, and its interior space still lingered in darkness. Lang had been up for an hour now, having his breakfast and reading the morning paper. His pipe smoke gathered in the air.

As I pulled myself from the carpet, I nearly fell onto Nordak's back. The room spun, and my head throbbed. A glass of water had already been laid out for me at the bar by the gnome, and I took my seat beside him. The water didn’t bring much relief.

"Where's... the bar guy?" I said groggily. I needed another drink to soften my hangover.

"Barom had to go and see about a business matter. The bar is closed, and the rest of the revelers have been scuttled off. I promised to lock up for the man when we five followed them on our way," Lang told me.

He'd prepared himself a large plate of scrambled eggs, which he had only half-eaten. "You gonna finish that?" I asked.

The gnome shrugged and pushed over his remainders. "I made extra. Be my guest."

Freya's heavy, thudding steps alerted me to her descent from the inn above. She reached the bottom of the stairs and took in the mess of last night's party. Without her armor or her priestly robes on, she looked like a regular woman, dressed in a plain white shirt and black pants, with her blonde hair braided into a tight knot.

"Are they going to charge us for this mess?" Freya spoke.

Bradley startled awake where he lay on the piano keys, and the instrument let out a chorus of mangled notes. "What?!" He shouted. His eyes glazed over, and he stared off into space for a moment, fondling his sword. "Ah, no, yes," he said aloud, gathering some clarity. He turned to Freya. "Sorry madam, what was that?"

"Barom said you could drink for free," Freya reminded him, "Not trash the place." She pointed to the piles of broken chairs and tables we stacked in the corner; the aftermath of a particularly violent game, since lost in my blackout.

Bradley swayed in his seat, staring at the mess for the longest time. Finally, he said, "Blood hell, did we do that?"

"Yes," Lang confirmed, and he swiveled around to glower at the man. "I smoothed things over this morning, and I covered the costs for the tables and chairs. In a drunken fit, Nordak seems to have ripped out the bathroom's plumbing, however. Gods know why he did it, but it's going to take some considerable repairs. Your stash, Bradley, shall go to that."

"My... my stash?" Bradley asked, trying to play coy.

Lang grimaced. "Yes, your stash. Without it, we are officially and completely bankrupt, gentlemen."

"So..." Bradley rubbed at his temples and tried to will away his headache. "Um, I suppose we'll need to take another job. Surely, we've got to be level seven in the Guild by now?"

I looked at the paper Lang had been reading as I continued to munch down on my breakfast.
