Eighteen

OLD BLOOD, NEW MONEY

I took my seat at the finest table in the city of Galhim, overlooking the poor and hungry below as a glass of shockingly expensive wine was placed in my hand. The waiter who'd served me left with my order already given, and I stared out across the room. A host of gnomes and elves sat enjoying the morning service, while violins played softly by the entryway.

I bought a potion last night which they said would count for a whole eight-hours of rest, but my eyes still seemed heavy. Much like magical healing, the more you used this stuff, the more it felt like an illusion, though this time I didn’t care. I had gone on a spree unlike any I'd ever done before.

For the clothes on my back, I'd traded up my adventurer's rags for the best silk suit money could buy, woven by ancient spiders, and infused with magic that made it feel perfectly comfortable, no matter the temperature. I'd gone down a long list of every most-expensive-thing I could think of; most expensive drink, most expensive woman, most expensive drug, and now, most expensive steak. All to celebrate my new wealth.

The servers brought this tiny piece of meat out on a porcelain platter. The chef delivered it personally, and started on his long spiel, "This is the finest aged cut of mandera meat in all of the western region. It is placed in a field of pure magical pleasure—energy stolen from the realm of Ambria—for eighty days, and then marinated to the point of near disintegration. It is so tender that it is like air in the mouth. It-"

It didn't look like more than a single bite to me. "You got any sauce?" I asked.

"S-sauce?" the chef said.

"Yeah, like tomato sauce, uh, wine sauce. I dunno. Something with sugar in it, human. Creamy. Tasty."

The man's face turned quickly to beet red, and he took a deep breath to steady before he could possibly respond. "We do not put SAUCE on this steak, sir." The way he said sir, you would have thought he meant to kill me.

I narrowed my eyes and told the man, "You bring me some sauce, or I will buy this restaurant and serve your roasted ass for dinner tonight." Honestly, I didn't even want the sauce, but this was part of the fun, and I'd already bought a couple of businesses so far.

After we left the dragon's hoard, the gnomes gave me a silly little book and said it was worth all the money I had. To use it, I only had to sign my name and write a number. It didn't matter how big that number was; until I started buying nations, my wallet wouldn't feel an ounce lighter.

The chef looked like he had tears in his eyes as he turned to the waiter. "Please... bring the goblin a sauce. I must return to the kitchen."

"That's more like it!" I called. The whole restaurant had their eyes on me, and some of the old gnomes left in a huff at the indignity.
