Many Marines who had been wounded while serving with Pershing’s American Expeditionary Force applied to the War Department for Purple Hearts after the award was revived in 1932. An unknown number—perhaps as many as five hundred—received Army-issued Purple Hearts in the 1930s.

After the Navy received its own legal authority to issue the Purple Heart in December 1942, Marines could apply directly to the Navy Department for the award. And they did, but how many is, again, not known. According to a 1950 memorandum from the Navy’s Medals and Awards Division, 9,520 Marines had been nonmortal battle casualties in World War I.4
