Chapter Twelve

“Going where?” Priscilla stood near as Jason packed a suitcase.

“A doctor’s convention. In California.”

“And you just found out about it now?”

“Yes. Whilst I was out, I stopped at the hospital to meet with my old colleagues. Dr. Kraus told me I shouldn’t miss it.” Walking to the bath, he loaded his shaving kit with his essentials.

It was a mixture of suspicion and delight. She liked the idea of not having to hide her affection for Charles, but seeing Jason pack, thinking she noticed a woman in the car with him earlier was all a bit suspect. “Are you having an affair?” she asked before thinking things through.

The rage on Jason’s face terrified her. As he rose to full height, appearing very powerful and menacing, he roared, “How dare you!”

Instantly regretting her words on so many levels, she immediately began backtracking, stammering, “I’m sorry. I forgot you’re impotent.”

“Priscilla,” he said in fury.

“It was a stupid thing to say.” She fretted, babbling, “How could you have sex with anyone else? You don’t have a proper sexually functioning—”

“Cilla!” He cut off her humiliating accusations. “Don’t you ever talk to me about having an affair,” he warned, moving toward her step by step, backing her up. “You may think I’m unaware of the goings on in this manor, but you’re sadly mistaken.”

“Jason.” She cringed at the implications. “I didn’t. I never.”

“I don’t give a rat’s ass what you do,” he replied, “But don’t you ever treat me like I am an idiot.”

“No…I didn’t mean— I only meant, I don’t think—” Incoherent syllables followed as she fidgeted with her hands.

With his hatred billowing out like steam, he continued throwing things into the bag.

Lost for words, she finally stood back as he carried the suitcase to the hall. “Have fun,” she chirped.

Glaring at her, Jason stormed down the stairs. Charles was there waiting for him at the door with his jacket.

Setting the case down, he allowed the old man to help him with it, standing tall over him to say, “I’m leaving the manor in your hands, Charles.”

“Yes, sir.” Charles nodded in understanding.

“Once I arrive, I’ll ring you with a number where I can be reached in emergency.”

“Yes, sir.”

Priscilla stepped down the stairs quietly, listening.

“Meanwhile, whilst I’m gone, I’ve given instructions to a funeral home to have Margerie’s body moved.”

Charles blinked and held back his, ‘yes, sir’ as Priscilla’s gasp was heard.

“I want her to have a proper religious plot. I hate her under the cold earth alone. It sickens me. It always had. She loved the church, so I want her near one.”

Finally, swallowing down his shock, Charles said, “Yes, sir.”

“You make sure it’s done properly. I’ve even sent a note to the vicar so he can advise them. It’s all sorted. When the plot is removed and relocated, I’ve arranged a gardener to clean up the area. If there are any problems you notify me when I call. Do you understand, Charles?”

The force, the power in which Jason was delivering his instructions frightened the elderly valet.
