The Helipad at Walker Valley Ranch

“Jeezuz man, take your sweet time, why don’t you?” I yelled at Ty as he finally tossed his rucksack my way and hopped aboard the chopper. “Aren’t I the one who got married last night? I should be in bed devouring my gorgeous wife and instead I’m being shipped off to God knows where with your no doubt hungover ass.”

“I know, sorry,” said Ty, clearly not appreciating my early morning humor.

Ty brushed passed me and almost huffed as he took his seat. I couldn’t help but wonder what was wrong as I watched him clumsily fiddle with the cross-chest safety belts and switch out his cap for a helmet.

Did he just huff?

Like some kind of teenage girl?

Maybe he was hungover. Lord knows I was, but I was in great spirits. Here I was thinking that I’d never see combat again and then pow, I get the call. I obviously didn’t want to leave my wife (of twelve hours!) and son but I was sure we’d be back soon.

For us to be called in like this, it must be an in-and-out mission, and it must be dirty—I’m sure some soldiers got in over their heads, that must be it. We’d probably be back the day after tomorrow and then I could actually start my honeymoon, and my new life as an EFP Recruiter. I had other plans, too. But all that would have to wait. For now, I was really going to enjoy this last kick at the can.

I was also rather amused, I had to say, at the thought of me and Ty being partnered on this mission. I rescue kids and he blows shit up, what situation could possibly call for such a solution as the two of us? I had to admit, it was kinda funny. Exciting, too. I loved working alongside Ty. He was an animal in the field, like a wolf: patient beyond reason and fierce beyond measure.

We’d fought together countless times over the years, yes, but we’d never been paired up like this, just the two of us, taking on the bad guys. I couldn’t wait to get to the base in Guam and get our orders. I was also looking forward to being able to tell Honor all about whatever adventure we were about to have. She had been great that morning—totally understanding, like usual—she’d actually rolled her eyes playfully and kicked me out of bed.

“Go on, get out of here,” she’d said as soon as she heard the sirens. “I don’t even think Walker is up yet. I’m glad we decided to put him in the Rose Cottage with the nanny, far, far away from all this noise! He probably slept really well. I should give him another hour or so and then I’ll check in on him. I’m going back to bed. Be home soon and take care of Ty. I think Lizzy is quite smitten with him.”

“Ha!” I had said as I kissed Honor on the forehead.
