CHAPTER 11 LIBERAL HYPOCRISY
From the moment Donald Trump became the Republican presidential nominee, the media and Democrats attacked his character and temperament, hurling charges of alleged misogyny and sexual misconduct with a laser-like focus. This strategy of character assassination ultimately failed, but there was a method to the liberal media mob’s madness. The raw political calculus was to so sully Trump that it would drive suburban Republican women away from him while simultaneously suppressing the Evangelical vote. Achieving either outcome would have put Trump in danger of losing; achieving both would have been fatal. The Democrats and the media will spend billions of dollars in 2020 on a campaign of fear that smears Trump and alleges that his so-called lack of character makes him unsuited for the office of the presidency. It is also the most persistent theme in their attempt to bludgeon voters of faith into silence and shame.
When the Lincoln Project, a dark-money group run by Never Trumpers and disgruntled former Republicans, launched an anti-Trump ad campaign in January 2020, it did so with a video titled “MAGA Church” that mocked Evangelicals for backing Trump. The video intercut clips of faith leaders praising and praying with and for President Trump with sound bites from rallies in which Trump used crude language or profanity. The message was clear: Evangelicals were frauds, hypocrites, and supplicants for prostrating themselves before a man so thoroughly lacking in character as Donald Trump. Not by accident, the video did not mention a single policy of Trump’s that animated voters of faith and drew them to support him.
Attacks on Trump’s character have been a constant refrain. After the release of the Access Hollywood tape in 2016, Vice President Joe Biden wrote on Twitter, “The words are demeaning. Such behavior is an abuse of power. It’s not lewd. It’s sexual assault.” Biden’s smear against Trump became somewhat ironic in 2019, when he was accused of multiple unwelcome advances and invasions of the personal space of numerous women—some of whom felt he had hugged or touched them in ways that were highly inappropriate and made them feel uncomfortable.
Four days after the release of the Access Hollywood tape, the New York Times published an account by two women who alleged that Trump had made unwanted advances against them in the 1980s and 1990s. Both were Hillary Clinton supporters and had contributed to her campaign. Neither of the women went to the authorities or took any action against Trump at the time of the alleged episodes. In one case, the alleged incident occurred on an airplane in full view of other witnesses (none of whom came forward to corroborate the accuser’s account), in which Trump was supposed to have reached and partially climbed over an armrest separating their seats.
Trump vehemently denied the allegations, denouncing them as “phony” and “made-up.” That didn’t prevent the media from reporting the stories ad nauseum and repeatedly providing a platform to his accusers. Having failed to derail Trump during the campaign, the accusers resurfaced at a Manhattan news conference in 2017 to repeat their stories.
