“HAS ANYONE SEEN MR. Godstone?” Evelyn asked as she walked into the manor’s expansive kitchen. She hadn’t seen Alistair all morning, and now it was afternoon. Though things between them were tense after she had ended their brief affair, they were at least still on speaking terms. It was rare for her to go so long without even seeing him.

All of the servants seated at the large center table jumped to their feet, abandoning their lunch to pay her customary respect.

“Good afternoon, Miss Smythe,” one of the maids said, her head bowed.

“Please, don’t stand up on my account,” Evie said, holding up her hand. “I didn’t realize I was interrupting your lunch break.”

None of the servants resumed their seats. They all seemed determined to hold tightly to protocol, to the point of ignoring a direct request from her.

“It’s no trouble,” the maid assured her. “Mr. Godstone took today and tomorrow off. He left the manor early this morning.”

Evie frowned. Since he had started working at the manor, Alistair had only ever taken Sundays off. She hoped nothing was wrong. “I see. Did he say where he was going?”

“He didn’t, Miss,” the maid responded. “Shall I try and phone him for you?”

“No, that won’t be necessary.” Evie didn’t want to bother him on his day off.

“Perhaps I can help in some other way,” the maid offered.

“It can wait. Please go back to your lunch break, everyone.” She turned and left, realizing that the longer she remained in the kitchen the longer the servants would be on their feet, standing just for her.

Evie decided to head back up to her room, and as she shut her bedroom door behind her anxiety rippled through her. Alistair hadn’t told her that he would be leaving. All sorts of frantic thoughts crashed through her mind. What if Nicholas had somehow gotten him sacked in retaliation? That meant that not only would Alistair lose out on getting father’s pension but that he would be gone forever. Gone without a goodbye.

A terrible tightening in her chest followed that thought. Losing him without warning for a second time would destroy her. With her heart racing, she sank down into the chair in front of her dresser.

Suddenly, she remembered the mysterious letter she had watched him receive a couple of days earlier. Did that have something to do with his sudden absence? Alistair had become evasive after receiving it. Maybe bad news had been delivered to him. His father had been having heart trouble, and though retirement had helped improve his health what if he had taken a turn for the worse?

That thought hurt even more than her fear of him being sacked, because she knew how much he idolized his father. Any son who was willing to take on a thankless job as a servant must love his father very much. Anything that could cause Alistair unhappiness would make her unhappy, too. All she wanted was for him to be happy. Just thinking of him suffering made her eyes well up with tears, blurring her vision.
