Chapter Six

He was a mere step behind her. Sniffling in the air, his nostrils filled with the soft floral essence of her perfume. Reaching out, he brushed his fingertips over her silky hair as she walked by. His hand started to tighten as he prepared to fist those strands in his hand and tug her with him to a private room beyond the hallway they were in.

“Amelia. You’re late.”

The low, guttural voice drew the beautiful brunettes’ attention and she turned to bestow a transparent smile of affection to the man walking up to her.

The growl belched loudly out of his mouth but was instantly squelched as he cast a furtive glance about, aware from the odd looks in his direction that his outburst had drawn unwanted attention. He jammed his fists into his pants pockets and strode irritably to the bar. ‘Whiskey, neat,” he snarled at the barman, whose twice-piqued disapprobation prompted an undisguised look of utter disgust at the strangely peculiar man who now sulked and fidgeted openly.

“Is there a problem I can help you with?” he said as he reached for the phone behind him. “I’m sure security would be able to escort you to an exit if you’re not feeling well.”

The blond man choked back his anger, steadied himself and grunted a perfunctory attempt at an apology to the bartender. He was here as an invited guest and could not afford to be summarily banned on his first visit because he indulged his short temper, simply for not being recognized. It was theme night and wearing a mask offered him the disguise he needed to be able to mingle freely and not be recognized.

It was the first time he managed to get this close to her in a long time. To the one woman he had loved for half of his life. To the one woman who had broken his heart. To the one woman, he hated with a passion that overruled the love that still pulsed inside his betrayed heart.

Amy Dwyer.

“No problem. I’m fine. Just a little annoyed that the sub I had my eye on is already taken.” He gestured with a nod and ordered another shot while he leered at Amy who was being lavished with kisses by Dax Cutter. “There are many other available subs around. I’m sure I’ll find one to play with,” he muttered fatuously.

Zander followed his gaze and frowned, not liking the malevolent stare in the tall man’s eyes as he watched Amy being passed from Dax into Gunther’s arms.

“I strongly suggest you do. Dax and Gunther are very possessive and protective of their sub. And make no mistake, every Senior Master in this club feels the same protective instinct when it comes to that particular sub.”

With a brief nod, he tossed the liquor down his throat and left. Zander stared after him as he disappeared down the stairs into the dungeon. Something smelled rotten and it worried him. With a brief glance in Alex’s direction, he nodded in the direction of the restaurant.
