WHAT ARE YOUR STRONGHOLDS?

In the behavior battle, do you know your greatest fear, hurt, or unmet need? You can overcome them, but you may have only suspected some of your issues and never before named them outright. There’s a power in such identification, and here are the common strongholds clients tell me can trigger abuses of food and behavior.

Anger

It’s so easy to get mad over a dozen little things any given day. You get an electric bill that seems too high. The salad you ordered at the restaurant doesn’t seem fresh enough and took forever to arrive at your table. Someone cuts you off driving to work … or in the elevator … or in trying to park the car. A peer digs at your ability as a professional or as a parent. Someone stands too close, invades your personal space, talks over you and interrupts, shuts down an idea. Your wallet gets stolen or flowers get picked from your front yard or one friend slanders another. People seem to push your buttons all day long. How much control do you have over those buttons anyway? Is there some seething undercurrent inside you?

It’s okay, natural even, to feel angry when you’re wronged or hurt. Abuse, unfairness, world affairs, traffic, stupidity, neglect—each of these things can trigger anger. Jesus felt angry too.

What to do with those feelings is where to fight the battle. Eating with a vengeance doesn’t help. Nor does stuffing anger until it either implodes, resulting in everything from unease and unrest to anxiousness and depression, or erupts into damaging relationships and maybe property (ever broken a pencil, slammed a book onto a tabletop, or dropped something in anger?).

Anger is often a secondary emotion to cover some of the other strongholds we’ll look at here, particularly what triggered Rachel’s food abuse and anger toward her mom.
