It is advisable to develop policies to reward farmers for producing animal products with human-inedible feed only. I’m quite sure that if we were to look back in time a hundred years we would find that people did not feed human-edible food to livestock; I think it is safe to assume that a hundred years from now our descendants will understand livestock should not consume human-edible food. We are in an unusual time period, when humans use large swaths of productive agricultural land to grow food-grade crops for livestock consumption. When we stop that, more land will be available for growing human-edible food.

I grant that, because of weather contingencies and other factors, some crops intended for human food will not meet the grade and can therefore be fed to livestock, which will allow such crops to retain some food value. This approach is a return to the original role of livestock in agriculture. With more finessing of food processing, as discussed in chapter 6, and with new technology to process wasted food on plates (the amount of which, of course, should be reduced, as a first goal) there are opportunities to direct more co-products to livestock.
