Downtown

Downtown is an urban area clustered around Congress Street that is home to residential lofts, tall buildings, parking garages, small retailers, museums, courthouses, and several unique historic areas. This section of town is rapidly becoming a top dining destination, with many restaurants found right on Congress, in the warren of little side streets, tucked under parking garages, on the edges of barrio neighborhoods, and in a historic hotel and train depot.

Foodie Faves

Cafe a la C’art, 150 N. Main Ave., Tucson, AZ 85701; (520) 628-8533; cafealacarttucson.com; American; $. Hidden away inside the courtyard of the Tucson Museum of Art, this family-run cafe has been pleasing museumgoers and downtowners since 1998. Chef-Owners Judith Michelet, her son Mark, and his wife Shirley take lots of pride in their food, and it shows. The long narrow space is bright and cheerful, with a quaint European feel, flower pots, and leafy vines line the outside patio and inside is comfortable and intimate with small tables and big windows looking out on the museum grounds. Most popular at lunch, the outdoor patio is the place to sit and dine on sandwiches like the highly popular and delicious gingered apricot almond chicken salad on a flaky house-baked croissant and the meaty Sonoran brisket, a super combo of braised beef, roasted red peppers, and pepper jack cheese on a toasted kaiser roll. Salads (try the Southwest Caesar), burgers (the burger and blue is a top pick, topped with gobs of Gorgonzola cheese), and homemade soups of the day round out the menu. Everything here is made in house, from the salad dressings to the tangy, refreshing lemonade. You’ll find ladies who lunch along with families and businesspeople at the closely spaced tables. Take a stroll after your meal and enjoy the lovely courtyard and fountains on the surrounding museum grounds. Open daily for breakfast and lunch until 3 p.m., dinner is served Thurs through Sat from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
