Rabbit in the Moon

For the Japanese there is no "man in the moon," but there is a rabbit. This rabbit is busily turning out a kind of rice cake called mochi. It is made by steaming a certain kind of rice and then pounding the rice into a doughy substance with wooden mallets. Mochi is one of the traditional New Year foods of Japan. The rabbit in this song does not live on the moon, but perhaps wishes he did.

The text has no special meaning but it is classified as a song about the moon. The song comes from Edo, the older name for the present-day capital of Japan, Tokyo.
