Worth Noting

FAMILY | Arashiyama Monkey Park (Arashiyama Monkey Park).

After hiking for 15 minutes up a low-lying mountain, you can feed wild monkeys who are carefully tracked and cared for by friendly staffers. Study the family photos of the 150 or so macaques that line the walls of the visitor’s hut and try to pick out who is who. A great view of Kyoto and the mountains beyond makes the trip worthwhile even if you’re not a monkey lover. TIP The paths are not paved, so choose your footwear wisely on rainy days. Look for the monkey sign at the south end of the bridge. | Genrokuyama-cho,8 Arashiyama, Nishikyo-ku | www.kmpi.co.jp | ¥550.

Bamboo forest.

Dense bamboo forests—with their rows on rows of long, ringed, smooth stems—provide a feeling of composure and tranquillity. The sound of wind blowing through bamboo, of stems knocking against one another and leaves rustling, is revered in Japan. Nowadays, bamboo forests are few and far between. This one, on the way to Okoeni Sanso, or to the campy yet picturesque Truck Train, from Tenryu-ji, is a delight. The forest is a short walk from the Saga-Arashiyama train station. | Ukyo-ku.
