Getting Here and Around

Air Travel

The Big Island’s two main airports are almost directly across the island from each other. Kona International Airport, on the west side, is about a 10-minute drive from Kailua-Kona and 30 to 45 minutes from the Kohala Coast. On the east side, Hilo International Airport, 2 miles from downtown Hilo, is about 40 minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. A 2½-hour drive connects Hilo and Kailua-Kona.

Car Travel

It’s essential to rent a car when visiting the Big Island. As the name suggests, it’s a big island, and it takes a while to get from point A to point B.

For those who want to travel from the west side to the east side, or vice versa, the newly rerouted and repaved Saddle Road creates a nice shortcut across the middle of the island.

As a result of multiple microclimates and varying elevations, the Big Island experiences its share of diverse weather. On one circle-the-island trip you may experience combinations of the following: intensely heavy tropical downpours; cool, windy conditions; searing heat; and even snow flurries if you happen to be driving up Mauna Kea. Be cautious on the mostly single-lane roads through rural areas, as these can be slick, winding, and poorly lit. Pull over to the side of the road to wait out intense bursts of rain that may obscure vision and create other hazardous conditions. These are usually brief and may even end with a rainbow.
