Where to Stay
The Bradley.
$ | B&B/INN | The thoughtful and hospitable owners take great pride in this town house, near the center, that has been in the same family for more than 100 years. Family antiques are still present, although rooms are now done up in the latest styles. Each room makes a statement: some have balconies, one is in art deco, another has an antique mahogany four-poster, but all have über-comfortable mattresses, quality toiletries, and heated floors in the bathrooms. If you’re in a hurry, you can have “breakfast in a bag” to take away with you. No children under 11 are allowed. A self-catering apartment is available as well. Pros: good value; attentive hosts; well-designed rooms. Cons: lots of stairs to top rooms; no private parking. | Rooms from: £88 | 19 Bayshill Rd. | 01242/519077 | www.thebradleyhotel.co.uk | No credit cards | 5 rooms, 1 suite | Breakfast.
Cowley Manor.
$$$$ | HOTEL | Good-bye, floral prints: this Georgian mansion on 55 acres brings country-house style into the 21st century with a mellow atmosphere and modern fabrics and furnishings. Witty sculptures and lighting complement the public rooms, beds are huge and comfortable, and bathrooms are trendy, with glass walls and expansive showers. Choose between rooms in the house itself (some with lovely balconies) or for more privacy, the converted stable block. There’s a two-night minimum stay on weekends. The spa, set into the ground, looks like a work of art. Cowley Manor is 5 miles south of Cheltenham. Pros: beautiful grounds; excellent spa facilities; relaxed vibe. Cons: slightly corporate feel; spa is set away from the main house. | Rooms from: £245 | Off A435 | Cowley | 01242/870900 | www.cowleymanor.com | No credit cards | 30 rooms | Breakfast.
Hanover House.
$$ | B&B/INN | Centrally located, this family-run guesthouse dating from 1848 brims with character, and richly colored cushions, flowers, a decanter of sherry, and myriad books enliven the bright and airy rooms. The accommodating hosts are more than generous with their time and local knowledge. Delicious, locally sourced, and organic breakfasts can be enjoyed overlooking the walled garden. Pros: fun; convenient location; award-winning breakfasts. Cons: not for those who wish to remain anonymous; all guests share one large table at breakfast. | Rooms from: £110 | 65 St. George’s Rd. | 01242/541297 | www.hanoverhouse.org | No credit cards | 3 rooms | Breakfast.
