Central European University (Közép-Európai Egyetem)

COLLEGE | Founded just after the fall of communism in 1991 as an international higher education institution based in Budapest and catering to students in the region, CEU is a humanities university that focuses on the idea of Open Society, freedom of dissent, and socially and morally responsible intellectual inquiry. It was recently expelled from Hungary by the government. The law they used to expel the school, known as Lex CEU, was proposed and passed in record time in March 2017 and had conditions that clearly affect only the running of CEU and no other Hungarian insitution, leading to criticism that the move was politically motivated. This led to mass public demostrations for months across the city and began a new wave of opposition movements against the current govenment. CEU has sinced relocated all its teaching facilities to Vienna, Austria. In October 2020, the European Court of Justice ruled that the law used to expel the school violates Hungary’s commitments under the WTO and infringes the provisions of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union relating to academic freedom. Even if CEU will not resume using the Nádor utca campus for its university courses, the fantastic buildings here host lectures (in English and open to the public) on a range of humanities subjects by international scholars. The campus site is made up of a former urban villa owned by the Festetics family and a brand-new, state-of-the-art Bream-certified conference and library facility, with an excellent view of the city from the roof. Hopp Ferenc Kelet-Ázsiai Művészeti Múzeum (Hopp Ferenc Museum of East Asian Art)

ART GALLERIES—ARTS | Patron of the arts, Ferenc Hopp, bequeathed his home and a 4,000-piece private collection to the creation of a public exhibition space and from 1923 to this day it remains the country’s only Asian art museum. Visitors can enjoy visiting a turn-of-the-century aristocrat’s home while perusing the collection’s currently 30,000 items spanning from Japan to the near East. Visiting exhibitions are always paired thematically with objects existing in the local collection, adding an interesting perspective. The small eastern-Asian-style garden space surrounding the museum is free and open to the public throughout the day. Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Egyetem (Franz Liszt Academy of Music)

CONCERTS | Founded by renowned Hungarian composer and pianist Franz Liszt, students have been training at this world-famous music conservatory with the likes of Erno Dohnanyi, Zoltán Kodály, and Béla Bartók among its teachers since 1907. The extravagantly decorated art nouveau concert halls at the Academy were built to enhance musical performance, both acoustically and visually. The interiors are richly decorated, featuring elaborate frescoes, stained glass, mosaics, grand marble stairs, rich woods, and tiled centerpieces featuring Zsolnay tiles. Audiences can even hear the grand hall’s beautiful organ, dating back to 1907. The academy is still a working college of music, attracting talent from around the world. There are events running throughout the year but performances are limited during July and August.
