Flying Scotsman at New York alongside a Budd electric railcar. TERRY ROBINSON

But Flying Scotsman pressed on and completed the second stage of the tour, its owner thoroughly enjoying himself, even though he knew it could only end in bankruptcy. After almost a year out of action, this time spent in the roundhouse at Spadina shed, Toronto, there was a glimmer of hope that the financial position could be salvaged by a period on show in San Francisco, starting with a trade fair known as ‘British Week’.

It was a 4500-mile journey from Toronto to San Francisco, on routes that had not seen a steam engine since the early 1950s. In more recent years, main line steam has made a spectacular comeback on some very long-distance excursions in North America, and effectively it was Flying Scotsman that paved the way for these, by proving that it was still possible. If only the train could have carried passengers, there might have been no financial problems, but it was found to be illegal to do so.
