Chapter 9

SARAH

Over the phone, I can hear Iris screaming desperately in the background, although I can’t understand what she is saying. I feel the anger growing inside me for what Chelsea has done. My sister remains silent. I don’t know what could have gone through her mind to tell Iris about Paul; I only know that it means trouble for me, serious trouble.

I am aware that, sooner or later, I would have to tell her. I have dragged it out long enough, after all. Still, I would rather have chosen the most appropriate moment, and I imagine Iris will be shocked by what she has just heard right now.

“Chelsea, what the hell have you done? You’re such an asshole,” I shout angrily without getting any response from my sister.

I hit the table with my fist knocking over two small plants I was transplanting into another pot as tears of helplessness well up in my eyes.

“Chelsea, fucking answer me! What the fuck have you done? What’s going on?” I shout, getting angrier and angrier by the minute.

I don’t hear Iris’ voice anymore, only Chelsea’s, mumbling words I can’t understand. Suddenly, I hear much more turmoil of people, shouting, rushing, and something that sounds like a siren.

“Chelsea, for fuck’s sake, can you explain to me what the fuck is going on,” I squeak nervously.

“You’d better go straight to the hospital. It’s your girlfriend’s mother; they’re taking her to Burlington. I think she’s in pretty bad shape,” Chelsea replies in a distressed voice.

“Shit,” I bark with another punch on the table. If they’re taking her all the way to Burlington, she must be pretty sick. In Rabell Falls, we have a minor health center that covers all the basic needs. However, when something serious happens, we have no choice but to go to Burlington, the largest city nearby.

I hurriedly gather up the plants on my desk and close the computer before bolting out the door and hopping on the bike for Burlington.

At least with the morning sun, the snow has melted, and I have a clear road. A different thing will be to return this afternoon if snow falls. I hope the weather holds out, or I will have to stay in Burlington for the night.

With a strong sun blinding my eyes, I leave town and, after a short drive on a secondary road, I take the exit to Interstate 89 North that will take me to Burlington in just over forty-five minutes.

I drive carefully through the highway traffic if there are still any ice patches from the night, although I assume that the rush of trucks heading for the East Coast of Canada will have melted them by now.

In any case, the last thing I need is to get a speeding ticket, which would slow me down, and besides, I have few points left on my driver’s license.

IRIS

A knot forms in my stomach after hearing the nurse’s scream from my mother’s bedroom window. I know all too well what that emergency means.

I ignore Chelsea and her stupid conversation with my girlfriend and rush into the house.
