The Dade Battlefield Historic State Park is the picture of serenity now, but it was once drenched in blood. Here Native Americans, who were not pleased at the prospect of being evicted from their land, ambushed more than 100 soldiers under the command of Major Francis L. Dade. The Dade Massacre, as it came to be known, touched off the Second Seminole War, a war that dragged on for seven years and became the country’s costliest Indian war. While visiting the small museum and reading the markers along the battlefield trail, you’ll have a chance to ponder the events of December 28, 1835. The park is open 8 a.m. to sunset daily. The visitor center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Dade Battlefield Historic State Park, 7200 CR 603, Bushnell. Located southwest of Bushnell off US 301, exit 63 on I-75; (352) 793-4781; floridastateparks.org.
