CHAPTER SEVEN

“HI, DADDY,” KATIE said when she heard the sound of her daddy’s voice, gruff and comforting on her phone. She really should have called him earlier. She had no excuse to give him, but knowing her father there wouldn’t be a need. Being a police officer in the NYPD had worn all the sensitivity out of him years ago.

“Katie dear, how are you? Have you gotten that Key West crew into shape yet?”

No, but they certainly were helping her get into shape. Or at least the experience there was helping her learn to deal with her problems. After all, she’d run as far south as she could. She’d given herself no option but to stop and deal with them.

Not that she could tell him that. That was the problem with a lie. You either had to continue the lie and live with the results, or you had to come clean about the lie you’d told which was always painful. She’d told her father that she was fine. How did she tell him now that she was struggling with anxiety and fear whenever something triggered memories of the shooting?

Her counselor advised her to be honest with her family so she could begin healing. But the thought of disappointing her father was more than she could handle now.

Baby steps. She needed to take baby steps right now. She only felt safe sharing those deepest memories haunting her with Dylan. And she hadn’t even shared how empty she discovered her life was after the shooting. How could she, without him thinking that she wanted even more from him than their friendship?

“I’m actually learning a lot here. It’s so much different from New York.”

“How’s that?” her father asked.

“Well, there’s the weather. It’s extremely humid and it rains a lot, but there are all these blooming trees and bushes. And there are these crazy iguanas. There was this huge one that came up on my back deck last night while I was sitting there. It was at least three feet long and it had these sharp teeth and these long spines on its back. It scared me to death.”

“Did you shoot it?” her father asked.

“No, of course not. Dylan put it back in his garden.” She knew her mistake the moment the words were out of her mouth. But it was too late. Her father had years of investigating under his belt. He never missed a thing.

“And who is this Dylan?” Her father’s voice all business now. Captain John McGee Sr. alert and on duty.

“He’s one of the flight crew members and he’s my landlord.” And the only man she’d ever met that could set her on fire with one touch. The night before had proven that. It also proved that Dylan was just as affected by her as she was by him.

She smiled, thinking of the way she had tortured him the night before. It was his own fault. Or was it? Dylan had told her more than once now that he didn’t get involved in short-term relationships.
