Chapter 23

Camden

Grace and I are hanging out after the game tomorrow night, and I’m going to tell her everything.

The thought causes anxiety to whittle my gut, but if she was actually compelled to follow me to figure out what’s going on, it’s beyond time to talk. We weren’t supposed to get serious, but with a woman like her, it’s impossible to be anything else.

I hope my life circumstances aren’t about to fuck everything up.

“You should go easy, man,” Ryker says to Everett, who is downing a second beer. At least he’s staying away from any hard stuff, but still. “We have a game tomorrow.”

Everett laughs. “Yeah, but it’s not like we’re going to win.”

Jax rolls his eyes. “Not with a hungover tight end, that’s for sure.”

“I’ll be good, don’t worry,” Everett insists. “It’s only noon, man, and these beers are basically water. There’s lots of time.”

We grabbed lunch, which always turns into a meal and a couple of beers when Everett is involved. As soon as we’re done eating, I’m going to Ridgefield, and I’ll be busy until heading to the stadium tomorrow.

I’m eating grilled chicken salad, which is a fair compromise since I plan to order loaded pizza and cheesy garlic bread tonight.

“Oh, I found out something about Dakota,” Jax says, and the name makes my head jerk up. “She used to date the owner of the Tampa Bay Dolphins.”

“So?” My interest in the journalist has peaked tenfold since she approached me the other day. Dakota made her plan to dig up anything she can abundantly clear, whether she has to stalk me in the process or not.

And when you’re actually hiding something, the feeling is very uncomfortable.

Jax shrugs and takes a massive bite of steak, making me wish I ordered one, too. “I don’t know, man. It’s the only football connection I could find.”

“Well, she definitely didn’t date Sterling,” Everett says, glancing down at his phone and tapping out a message. “She might be out to get us, but she’s still a smoke show. No way he pulled her, even with all his money.”

The restaurant is casual but upscale with the seating well-spaced out for privacy. Still, I’ve become paranoid since joining this team and have, in actual fact, been followed. So, I lower my voice and hope that no one is currently listening to us.

“Agreed that Poindexter has no clue about football or women.” I stare at the white pillar candles burning on the table, wishing so many of my date nights weren’t spent with a bunch of behemoths. “And now he owns a field of broken dreams for some unknown reason.”

“None of the coverage has been about Sterling,” Hunter says. “Surely a billionaire makes a lot of enemies doing whatever the hell billionaires do to get so ungodly rich. Yet she’s been radio silent on the team owner. It’s got to be a player who fucked her over, and now she’s taking her anger out on all of us.”

“But what’s her end game?” I glance at the clock as discreetly as possible to see how much time I have left.
