Lucas

Lucas draped an arm over Katie’s shoulders as they walked along the Marina boardwalk toward the docks. It was a beautiful morning, bright sunshine, warm breeze, cloudless blue sky, and he couldn’t wipe the silly grin off his face.

He was shocked when she agreed to spend the entire day with him, particularly when he refused to tell her where they were going. She hadn’t stopped smiling since he picked her up bright and early at seven a.m. No sass, no arguments, just that happy Katie smile. A borderline miracle.

They came to a stop at the end of a lineup of people, waiting outside a locked gate that led straight down to the docks. He watched Katie’s eyes widen as she noticed the man standing at the gate with a clipboard, wearing a tan Vallarta Ocean Explorers t-shirt with a big, blue whale tale sketched above the words.

“Oh my gosh.” She turned to Lucas, bouncing on her toes with excitement. “We’re going whale watching?”

“Yep. Unless you’d rather skip it and get back to work?” He wondered briefly if he shouldn’t be joking about that. She might take him up on it.

But Katie squealed in delight and threw her arms around his neck, and Lucas felt like he’d won the lottery. He wrapped an arm around her waist and marveled at how perfectly their bodies fit together. When she stepped away, she was bubbling with excitement.

“There’s our boat.” He pointed toward the white gate. Through the bars and down the ramp was an inflatable Zodiac tied to the dock. It was larger than he’d expected, with a white hull and a wide blue sunshade that covered the back half of the boat. But it looked like it sat only a dozen or so people. He was a hint worried that it wouldn’t be sturdy enough for Katie.

“I’ve been wanting to do this forever.” She looked up at him in awe, like he was a god who had somehow guessed her deepest desires.

Maybe she didn’t remember telling him just how long she’d been meaning to do this? One of the many things she’d told him on the beach that day, when she’d shared her tacos and her dreams with him. She’d opened up to him, and that wasn’t something he took for granted. Not from someone who protected herself the way Katie did.

He’d decided that whale watching was one dream he could easily to turn into reality for her. And it looked like, for once, she wasn’t going to fight him on it.

“Thank you.” She snaked both her arms around his waist and leaned into his side.

“My pleasure.” He kissed the top of her head and she rested her cheek against his chest, letting out a contented sigh.

The man with the clipboard worked his way up the line, taking people’s names and checking them off a list.

When he reached them, he said, “Lucas Reyes, sí?”

Lucas wondered if they’d met before. He glanced down at the man’s name tag—Juan—but he didn’t recognize the name or the face.
