EVANDER
PIPER STOOD, WIDE-EYED and gaping at where heâd been seconds before. Her eyes misted over, and tears threatened to spill down her cheeks. But instead of crying, she inhaled a shaky breath, pulled her cell phone out of her purse, and dialed a number.
She looked so sad. Not sad because sheâd lost someone she cared about; it was something closer to disappointment. The gaping hole in her heart was evident in her pained expression.
Evander backed into the alleyway, never taking his eyes off her. She believed heâd left, but he couldnât bring himself to go.
Not just yet.
Pacing nervously, she wrapped her arms tightly around herself until a car with flashing lights pulled up next to her.
âExcuse me miss? Were you the one that placed the call?â A uniformed man asked, as he stepped out of the car.
âYes,â she said weakly.
A second man stepped exited the car accompanying the first.
âI am Officer Stevens and this is Officer Brent.â He motioned to the man bent down over Evanderâs mark. âCan you tell us what happened?â he asked, and flipped open a small notepad.
âIâwell, Iâ¦â she stammered.
Evander stepped up behind her and placed his hand on her shoulder, then leaned forward to whisper softly in her ear. âHe collapsed.â
She froze for a heartbeat.
âHe collapsed,â she repeated obediently. âI tried CPRâ¦â
The uniformed man continued to question her and the entire time Evander stayed at her side, his hand staying on her shoulder.
She couldnât see him, but he could let her know he was there by allowing her to feel his touch.
If another Reaper asked him why heâd continued to stay, he wouldnât have an answer. He himself didnât even know. He just wasnât ready to leave yet.
âDo you need a ride home?â Officer Stevens asked once he finished with the barrage of questions.
âNo, thank you. I just parked down the street,â Piper muttered, pointing in the opposite direction sheâd been walking in earlier.
Her breath hitched when Evander dropped his arm to his side. Nervously, she took a step forward, sparing one last glance down at the lifeless mortal before walking around the corner as fast as her tall heels would allow.
Evander transported, and reappeared at her side as she pressed her back against the side of a small and cozy cafe. She clutched her hand to her chest and tried to slow her rapid breathing.
âTen⦠nine⦠eightâ¦â she began to count slowly. Her eyes shut, long lashes fanning out across the top of her flushed cheeks.
Everything about her was curious. Evander dropped his hood back and made himself visible to her once more.
âFour⦠three⦠twoâ¦â she continued.
âWhat are you doing?â he asked, not realizing heâd spoken aloud until her head whipped in his direction. She let out a yelp of surprise.
Piperâs hand jumped to cover her mouth. âHowâhow did you find me?â she asked.
âI never left,â he said simply. âYou asked me not to.â
She blinked. Her eyes wide with wonder. No human had ever looked at him like that before. Anger, hate, confusionâthose were
