I frowned, not sure what Ryan meant to say, but then looked out the window. The crowds were gathered around a red carpet and the tall hotel where the event was being held rose behind them. Cameras were rolling, and it was time for our show. I nibbled on the corner of my lip, and then swore, wiping my teeth with a finger. I felt like a nervous schoolgirl, not the pop star I knew how to be. I took a breath. I could do this. We could do this.

Ryan came around and helped me out of the door. We beamed and I leaned into him. He smelled like the woods we’d grown up around. He smelled like home. That made my smile genuine.

The cameras flashed, and the reporters shouted.

“What happened in your dressing room?” one asked. “We heard there was another diva tantrum?”

A young man leaned forward, his curls in his eyes. “Tell us about your temper. What set you off this time? Was it Bad Boy Jake Irons?”

I whispered to Ryan, through my full-wattage smile, “Bastards.”

He took my hand in his and squeezed it—full support, no questions asked. It’d been like that on the playground in our school days. The bullies would come for me because I was small and shy, and Ryan would be there at my side, showing me how to stand up to them and helping me do it.

“Are you dating your guitarist now, Miss Sparks?” a pretty blonde reporter asked, her eyes scanning how close we stood to one another.

I winked at her and pulled Ryan toward the entrance. I wasn’t surprised they knew who my guitarist was as the band had been on more magazine covers than I could count. Still, I was surprised at the little twinge of jealousy that rose in my chest, like Ryan was my own secret.

Our friendship was something that was just ours, that we could carry with us wherever we went. I resented that Keith made me flaunt it and pretend it was more than that, to use it. But I knew I needed to do something to repair my reputation. Even if I knew I was justified in my anger, my career was about being an act. My smile twitched as we stepped through the doors of the hotel.

The front desk was a gold expanse to our right, but the ropes led us directly to the ballroom. A coat check had been set up at the entrance and we gave up our jackets and stepped inside. Round tables were scattered around, covered with white and silver tablecloths. The center of the room remained clear for dancing and a small band was set up on the stage. Above it all was a banner for the pet charity we were donating to.

We made our way around the room, greeting a few people we knew, and stopped at the bar.

“A drink?” I asked Ryan.

He grinned at me. “Only one . . . or two.”

I was transported back to the night we celebrated graduating high school.
