CHAPTER SEVEN

Eventually, the storm eased until it was just drizzling outside. Flora hopefully flicked the porch light switch, but the light didn’t come on, and when she poked her head outside, she saw that the light fixture was empty. Lightbulbs would have to go on her list, but first, she needed her notebook so she could make a list. On the upside, it wasn’t raining hard enough to completely drench her anymore, so she hurried out to the truck to grab her snacks and drinks and brought in the bag of supplies from the hardware store for good measure. Then she ran to the trailer, rescuing her broom, a bag she thought was full of her bedding and another one she was pretty sure held towels, and a box of cleaning supplies. Back inside, she used some of the towels to mop up the water on the floor left over from the leaky roof and her own drenched clothes, then went upstairs and did the same for the splashes around the bucket, which was mostly doing its job and preventing further water damage to the floor.

She heaved the bucket into the bathroom, emptied it into the bathtub, then returned it to catch the remaining drips from the ceiling. Then, she went down to Amaretto’s room and started sweeping. This tiny office room on the first floor was going to be her base of operations for now. She hadn’t brought any furniture—her apartment had been fully furnished when she rented it, and it hadn’t made sense to buy furniture in Chicago and then drive it all down to Kentucky with her. She’d have to get some necessities in the next day or two, but for now, she made a usable bed on the floor with her bedding and her pillow from home. She plugged her phone into the wall outlet, changed into her pajamas, and slipped under her comforter. The house was silent around her other than for the pattering of rain, and her heart was heavy with thoughts of the man she had been too late to help, but despite everything, she still had a glimmer of hope inside her. She settled down to sleep with Amaretto purring on her chest.

The next morning, she woke up with a stiff neck and sunshine streaming in through the window. Amaretto was perched on the windowsill, and the cat gave a cute trill as she twitched forward, following the shadow of a bird as it flew by. Flora smiled, glad that her cat, at least, was enjoying their new accommodations. She enjoyed the peaceful feeling of the morning for a few moments, then she got up and tried to remember which bag she had packed her toothbrush in.

An hour later, Flora was feeling mostly like herself. It felt strange to get ready in a house that was so empty it almost seemed to echo, but she kind of liked it. It made the house feel full of potential.

She ate some beef jerky for breakfast, then checked the fridge.
