Chapter 11
Peter had no idea why he was compelled to drop by Cam and Natalie's job with lunch. He liked to think of it as his way of saying thank you to Natalie and not being rude to Cam since Cam worked with her, but he knew it was more than that.
Part of him wanted to make sure Cam was okay. After what happened last night, he felt slightly protective. Her going off to workâeven with Natalieâdidn't necessarily mean Lex wouldn't find her. Hell, he managed to find her at Natalie and Christopher's house a few days after he attacked her. How the guy was able to walk around was beyond him. It didn't make any sense so Peter didn't even want to try. It would just infuriate him.
However, there was another, smaller part of him that wanted to see her just to see her. To see how she was doing. To look at her. To be around her. He found himself increasingly drawn to her, and he didn't particularly like it. It always started the same, this feeling. He liked a girl, wanted to spend time with her, then got over it and moved on. No strings. No attachment. Just fun.
With Cam, it was different. Besides the fact that she was his best friend's wife's best friend, there was something about her that he couldn't shake. It wasn't that he would see her afterward either. It was more likeâ¦she didn't deserve to be used for fun.
But he still felt himself wanting to be around her.
He shouldn'tâmaybe this was him leading someone else on.
But no. Cam would see through his bullshit a mile away. She couldn't get led on even if he wanted her to.
"You're fucked, Holiday," he murmured, ducking his head as he got into the car, Chinese takeout in his hand. He placed the plastic bag on the passenger seat and started the car. "What is going on with you, man? Hockey season is weeks away. Focus on that."
And now he was talking to himself.
He shook his head, cranking up his eighties playlist in hopes it would drown out his thoughts. It workedâkind of.
Peter got to the front desk of the office and decided to ask for Natalie. It would be safer that way. The secretary at the front seemed confused. Peter thought it probably had to do with the fact that Peter was not blond or her husband and yet he was here asking for her. Also, Natalie was the last woman to cheat on anyone, let alone Christopher.
The secretaryâher name plate said Drewâdialed back.
"Nat?" she asked on the phone. "A Peter Holiday is here to see you." There was a pause. "Okay, I'll send him back."
Drew stood after buzzing the door open. She held it open while Peter stepped through.
"She's in the back," Drew said. "Go to the last row, make a left, and her cubicle is right there."
"Thanks," Peter said.
"No, thank you," Drew said. "We need all the help we can get on that fourth line.
