Chapter Eight

The smell of bacon tickled my nose and brought my mind back to consciousness. I started to rise but winced as I realized my muscles were sore and stiff. Long term adrenaline rushes definitely had their drawbacks.

Swinging my legs off the side of the couch, I saw that Finn’s body was absent from the other one. I padded lightly into the kitchen and found him with his back towards me in front of the stove. He whistled a cheery tune as he turned the bacon. I saw a bowl filled with white batter and assumed it was pancakes. My stomach growled in excited anticipation.

“Where did you get the food?”

He whirled with a spatula in hand and I held back a giggle. He had a flour streak down the middle of his forehead and another up the side of his cheek.

“You snuck up on me,” he chuckled. “I’m not used to that.”

I stuck out my foot and wiggled my toes. “No shoes. Bare feet are quieter.”

He frowned at my foot. “You need to wear your shoes in here. There’s a lot of broken things from the soldiers. I don’t want you to step on anything and cut yourself.”

I saluted him sternly. “Yes sir.”

He sighed heavily and put the spatula down. Walking over towards me he grabbed my hand and pulled me into his arms. “I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be a dictator,” he brushed some of my hair off my face. “I thought I lost you and it scared me to death. I don’t want to see you hurt…ever.”

His hand stayed on the side of my face and I leaned into it, closing my eyes and appreciating the warmth he created within me. I opened my eyes, wanting to see his beautiful green ones. “I don’t want to see you hurt either, so I guess we will both be careful from here on out.”

He smiled as he gazed down at me. “From here on out.” He lowered his head towards mine and I felt my pulse begin to race. Was he really going to kiss me? Here?

I didn’t care and when I felt his lips touch mine, my chest hitched with excitement. The kiss was warm, soft and his breath tasted minty.

A loud screeching startled us both and we whirled towards the noise. The bacon was burning on the stove and the smoke detector in the corner of the kitchen was warning everyone with ears. I heard Finn swear as he raced over and removed the skillet from the burner. I grabbed the broom and beat the detector to its death, its quiet body lying on the floor.

“Well that’s one way to silence the dang thing.”

I smiled at Finn and nodded. “First time I’ve ever heard it. Mom was great in the kitchen.”

“I wish I could’ve been around to try some of her meals.”

“Me too. Except maybe then you’d have high expectations for me and I’m not that great in the kitchen.”

“Well it’s just your luck that I am great in the kitchen.
