Chapter Fifteen

“How is meditating? Is it helping you?” Jax questions. It’s been three days since the funeral. Three days since everyone in the Kingdom of Ayelia was informed that Weylon was taking over as King. Part of him is glad that they’re not keeping secrets anymore, but within the last three days he’s been so busy he doesn’t remember what sleeping is. “Farris mentioned you haven’t been letting him take your bending away as much when you’re at the castle. Why? If the others find out they might not be happy about it.”

Weylon knew deep down that Farris would tattle on him, but he had hoped that he wouldn’t. He was hoping that Farris would realize he was trying and keep it to himself. A secret of sorts between the two of them. Though he should have expected the whole time for Farris to exploit him. He’s not angry about it, he knows Farris is doing his job, but he’s still not happy that now Jax is questioning him.

Weylon looks down at his hands. The familiar buzzing feeling settles under his skin. He’s grown accustomed to it. He’s begun to get comfortable waking up to feel that, it’s his power after all. It keeps him warm through the nights. The once chilly breeze is nothing but a gush of wind now. Not getting cold anymore is one blessing of the fire within him.

“I thought that by keeping my use of bending while at the castle, it would help me control it. I’m surrounded by people daily. If I can go without flaring up or burning anyone, then isn’t that a good thing?” Weylon explains quietly. He’s not sure why he’s embarrassed and afraid to admit his ideas. It’s just the two of them outside training. The others have their own things to do, Leighton is visiting the city. He doesn’t have to worry about them overhearing him; yet, he’s still afraid that someone might. “I know it isn’t wise to lie to everyone and pretend Farris took my bending away, but if no one knows then what harm does it cause?”

Jax sighs. He grumbles something under his breath, places a hand on his hip and directs his attention towards Weylon. “I understand you may think it’s a good idea, Your Majesty, but…” Jax pauses mid-sentence. Weylon glares. But what? “But…what if something happens? If someone angers you and you flare up? What then? Can you get it back under control?”

No, Weylon’s mind supplies. He doesn’t wish to admit it though. He’ll feel like a fool saying it out loud. So far, this is their second day of training within the last two weeks and it’s not going well considering he has three weeks left. Time is slipping through his fingers. He needs to make progress today.

“I see.” Jax responds to himself. He looks down at his hands before his gaze travels to the sun, “King Weylon, do you know the origins of Fire bending? Do you know where it came from?”

Weylon knows the answer.
