Too quickly, the first night rolled into the second, and the third. It was five o’clock after a long day of sex, indulgent food, and incredible surfing.

“I’m gonna hit the shower,” Michael said, his arms stretching overhead and then pulling her close, onto his chest.

“And then what? The pool?”

“Definitely.”

It was their third night. They’d gotten into the habit of watching the sunset with mai tais accompanied by the sounds of the Jack Johnson-esque guitarist at the pool bar. It was all part of the manufactured image of Hawaii Nei, she knew that. But it grew easier to ignore that after a couple of days of luxury.

“I’ll head in after you,” she said, and laid back on the bed to close her eyes for a second. Then she grew fidgety and picked up her phone, though she hated the idea of using it to pass the time. Surely, there were better things to do in Paradise? But she wanted to check in for any emails from Candace, despite her living in the fantasy mantras. There weren’t any.

And then a Facebook alert pinged up on his phone, with the message bubble: Watch out, Oahu, Patricia’s coming to town!

Patricia? Did she know a Patricia? Despite the voice that told her it was probably a virus just waiting to unleash untold damage to her phone, she clicked on the alert. And there, in the profile picture alongside the post, she saw the one thing that could bring her tumbling out of Paradise faster than a serpent with an apple. The earrings! It was her, Corner Girl, Michael’s wife. Emma’s chest went cold. Right before her eyes, another post popped up from Patricia.

Michael’s little lady is coming to town to keep an eye on him. We all know he gets into mischief when he’s let loose. Clear your calendars everyone!

She threw the phone and it landed with a thunk on the floral carpet. Emma had convinced herself that Michael and his wife were over. But this told a whole different story. What was going on with him? Was she in Paradise with a bad guy, who was screwing over his innocent wife, just to show himself there was still someone who thought he was special?

The bathroom door opened.

“What was that?” Michael asked.

“The future.”

“What?”

“Never mind,” she said. Her mind reeled, but the one thing she wasn’t going to do was speak rashly. She had to think.

At sunset drinks Michael asked if there was anything wrong. “You’re awfully quiet.”

“Am I? How long do you have off?” she asked.

“I thought we were meant to be avoiding reality?”

“It had to end sometime.” All that time thinking of what to say and that’s what she’d come out with? Amazing.

“Okay, I don’t know, what about you?” There was that tug at the side of his mouth again.

There could be lots of reasons he would look nervous, but why did her suspicions keep landing on dishonesty? “I’ve got to be in the office on Thursday.” She tried to ignore the deja vu the silence between them brought on.
