Then...

Reverend Battles moved in with us, making his bed on the living room sofa. I didn’t like him despite the fact he was overly nice to me, or maybe that was why I didn’t like him. At any rate, he was there, and there wasn’t a thing I could do about it other than stay in my room as much as possible. However, his presence totally canceled any possibility of me calling Polo, and that made me want to cry.

So I did.

I lay in my bed most nights and cried not only because I missed Polo, but because of how nice my mother was to the reverend, nicer than she’d ever been to me. This was one of the many times I longed to be with my father, but my mom had made it clear Reverend Kenneth Doll had chosen the child he wanted. Plus, for him to have once made the poor decision to marry my mother, he was probably no better than her.

I couldn’t wait until I was eighteen. I was going to leave home even if I had to live on the streets. The good thing about it was that I had one of those weird birthdays. I’d turn eighteen that October, so I wouldn’t have to wait until after graduation to leave.

Thank God for that.

When I wasn’t crying, I was reading or sleeping or doing whatever chore my mom had me do. The only time I absolutely couldn’t avoid Reverend Battles was during mealtimes, so I hated mealtimes. I pretty much hated eating at that point, but it was what it was.

My life truly sucked.
