Andrew really wanted to take Kyler to lunch and then get tested together, but neither man could get lunch off at the same time. So Andrew went by himself before he even went back into work. He was pretty sure Kyler was getting tested later that day and was silently glad for that. He certainly didn’t want Kyler getting sick or hurt in any way, and to know that he was the cause would kill his heart.
Andrew knew he should have called Kyler at some point, but the station’s phone rang right when he walked into the station that morning. A couple texts about getting tested that morning was all he could manage. Even keeping his promise to get tested at lunch was difficult.
A twelve year-old girl who normally walked to school every day had never made it there. The school called mom and mom panicked, calling the station. At first, Andrew just thought it was some girl skipping school and sent the officer on duty, Pryor. Not even twenty minutes after Pryor left, he was calling Andrew to the crime scene.
Her name was Mackenzie and she had put up a fight, probably the whole time she was getting raped. Andrew knew it was the same guy, even though he hadn’t used drugs this time. He didn’t have evidence to support the knowledge, but his instinct told him it was the same sick pervert. She was found lying up against a blue house in between two houses. She probably passed by the area every day on her way to school. Andrew stood on the sidewalk in front of the house, looking around the neighborhood. The whole street appeared to be asleep, but Andrew knew it was the quiet after everyone had left for work. He would bet his next paycheck that the bastard lived in one of these houses or frequented the area enough that someone on this street knew him. He probably watched her every day, fantasizing and planning.
Pryor had thrown a blanket over her and had picked her up in his arms. He was just holding her like that. He was an average looking black man who was married with three children of his own. Andrew thought he had three boys. He was a good small town cop who really loved his job, far more than any officer who worked for Andrew. Andrew was glad it was Pryor who’d found her. His silent tears falling on the blanket that covered the little girl said more about the caring person he was than anything could. It also said he would probably never make it as a bigger city cop. Pryor wasn’t thinking as a cop the instant he saw the girl. It was purely a paternal impulse that had kicked in.
Andrew looked at the girl and at her face that was already starting to swell around her left eye and her bloody lip. She still wasn’t conscious, and moving her was probably not the smartest thing
