CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The grove was full of people tonight. With school out, the kids were running around, playing ball, and just enjoying the warm summer night. CC was seated with Carsen and Fitch, chatting casually as Bron and Mila sat at the end of the table. Skull was on the opposite side, straddling the bench seat, with Avery between his thighs. He was so overtly affectionate with her; it was like watching an entirely different person emerge from his cocoon.

“I love you, baby,” Skull whispered in Avery’s ear. She smiled, leaning back against him, turning to stare at his handsome face.

“I love you, too,” she said, kissing him.

“Mila? Any word from Dr. Roth?” asked Fitch.

“I think May spoke with him a few days ago. The find of Kahn’s tomb was amazing, and the Mongolian government has taken that over, but the temple is turning into an astounding find all on its own. It pre-dates Kahn and his reign. She was very happy for him,” smiled Mila.

“That’s awesome. I heard that Richard Geller is going to be tried for murder as well as conspiracy and a number of other charges,” said Fitch. Mila nodded, smiling at the man.

“Yep. Couldn’t happen to a nicer person.” They heard the tinkling of silver on glass and turned to see Mama Irene smiling at them, Matthew by her side as always.

“Welcome, welcome, my loves! No wedding news tonight, or is there, Carsen?” She winked at the young woman, and Carsen just shook her head, smiling. She kissed Fitch, just to let him know it was all good, then turned back to the older woman. “We have plenty of other news, no worries. First, I know that you’re all aware my dear friend Ruby Gerard has been stayin’ out here while we help Carsen, her granddaughter. I’m happy to tell you that I’ve convinced Ruby to join our family.”

Cheers echoed in the grove as Ruby smiled at the young people. She stood, tears in her eyes, and hugged her friend, Irene.

“I’ve been alone a long time,” she said, shaking her head. “I’ll be selling the house in the Garden District and movin’ out this way. Matthew has offered me the island mansion. I’ll be helpin’ with events out there, and yet I’ll still have my peace and quiet most of the time.”

“But, Grandma, you’ll be alone out there,” said Carsen, filled with concern.

“Honey, I’ve been alone surrounded by thousands of people. I’ll have more company out there than I’ve ever had. I’m just a boat ride from Irene, Matthew, George, and Mary, and I’ll be able to have time to bring those gardens to life again.” Carsen smiled, realizing that her grandmother seemed happy.

“There’s another announcement,” said Irene, turning to Matthew, who took the microphone.

“I made a promise a few weeks back,” he said, grinning. “Avery? I’ll be starting construction on your manufacturing site. You need to get with Grant and tell him what you want it to look like. Robicheaux Oil and Gas will be funding your entire makeup line.
