Chapter 11

Noah recovered quickly from his injuries against the giant corpse-monster. In fact, he bounced back so fast that it had surprised everyone, including himself. He could only imagine that his speedy healing had something to do with his orb. None of his bones were broken and his mind still seemed to be in tip-top shape. Currently, he was being given a tour by his former Merriweather boss, Burgess Goodrich, to learn about what was new in Steelton.

They were standing outside Lucy's Diner. Both inside and outside the building had completely changed in the year Noah had been gone.

Booths and market stalls lined the street outside the building. The people of Steelton haggled, bartered, and traded. Money was useless now. The Town Hall run by both Mayor Connolly and Burgess Goodrich controlled the main distribution of food supplies, but any surplus goods or services were often exchanged in front of Lucy's Diner. Being back in Fort Steelton behind fortified walls relieved a lot of Noah's stress and even put him in a good mood.

"You guys installed the printing press here?" Noah asked.

"Technically, we just moved it from the warehouse," Burgess explained. "After your little speech on the day of the Shift, this place turned into a general meeting area. Lucy's quickly became the central hub for trading information about a week after you left. People were always coming down here anyway to gossip and trade, so I figured it was wise to hand out our newsletters here. Plus, I wanted to give Venu more room for his experiments."

Noah nodded, looking around with great interest. A few people recognized him, but he pretended not to see them, not to make eye contact. He was here for business, not to socialize. There was a lot of catching up to do.

It had been nearly a week since Noah had woken up in the medical ward in Steelton. The remaining Merris had gone home to their families. Noah had caught up with his parents first, then the Dormunds, the local LCO, and a few people at Town Hall. He’d updated them on everything that had happened, and after swearing them to secrecy, had even told the Mayor and Burgess some of the key details about his unique existence.

"Any updates on the wall modifications I suggested?" Noah wondered.

Burgess nodded, hands folded behind his straight back. "As you can see, nearly half the fort isn't in town, just like you planned. Everyone is contributing their effort to build a second wall at two hundred yards past the perimeter."

"Technically, it'll be ten walls with a space between them," Noah instructed. "We don't want to send the wrong message to those coming to join our fort. The space between the walls will act as choke points too."

"And with undead waves attacking the Fort, we'll already have designated earthen choke points too," Burgess added. His hand went to adjust his tie, frowning when he realized it wasn't there. “It’s still hard for me to imagine such a thing.”

Noah smiled. His old mentor had quickly become a part of the community.
