Susannah closed the door behind her and leaned against it for a moment before dashing up the stairs to her room and flopping on her bed. What had she done? Her resolve to stay away from Chase disappeared like the morning mist. He had asked her to the festival. It was something she’d dreamed about for years. Last year she thought he’d come close, but then he was needed back in Dallas for something to do with his father’s business and the holiday.

There was no such hindrance this year, and now her heart beat wildly in anticipation. She already had an outfit picked out. It was one Mrs. Thornton had helped her with. A smile wrapped itself around her heart and spread across her face. It may end up being nothing more than this one time with him, but she’d take it, no matter what.

After changing into her nightgown, she sat on the edge of the bed. Chase had said he wanted to spend more time on the ranch in the future. If that was the case, maybe she needed to spend less time on her horse and more in the kitchen with Greta, or she might never attract his attention as more than a friend and riding companion.

Greta and Mrs. Thornton would both like that. They’d pleaded with her enough times about learning something more than riding and herding cattle. Maybe Greta would teach her how to make Chase’s favorite peach pie.

She swung her legs up onto the bed and pulled them close to her chest. She rested her chin on her knees and envisioned serving a slice of pie to Chase and telling him she’d made it herself. That would get his attention.

Satisfaction with her plan washed through her and she shivered in delight. Pulling the sheet up over herself, she laid her head on the pillow and imagined the day when she could serve Chase a meal she herself had cooked. Tomorrow she’d approach Greta about teaching her the basics of cooking and taking care of the kitchen.
