Chapter Six
What started out as a nightmare had the potential to turn into something quite wonderful.
Maria had saved me from a grave mistake, and I had to remind myself to thank her one day.
In a twisted way, Maria deserved a round of applause for serving as the guru to my awakening. The common denominator of why my past relationships never worked out all reduced down to one person, Yasmeen.
There was nobody like her.
It wasnât about her external beauty, but the magical presence she brought to my life. She was my lighthouse, her bright light guiding me safely to land before I floundered on the rocks of life.
Her friendship was true and selfless, and she was always there when I needed it the most. Never could I envisage feeling a deeper love, or connection for another person, not like I did with her.
Yasmeen Irivani is the woman of my dreams, and subconsciously, Iâd been waiting for her to come to the same realisation, even when Iâd told myself it would never be, could never be.
Now, my future was in the hands of Nadim.
I prayed he would care more for his daughterâs happiness than his own pride.
But I didnât hold out much hope.
I had to go back to work, even though smiling and pretending everything was hunky dory was the last thing I wanted to do.
âAre you okay, doll?â My co-worker Susie was quick to approach. âI canât believe what that bitch did earlier, and sheâs got the nerve to come back in here like nothingâs happened.â Susie nodded toward the corner and standing right next to the deejay booth was Maria and her butch mate, Lorna.
Both were glowering at me, like Iâd done something wrong.
âIâm not having this,â I said. âThis is my workplace and if she doesnât like it, she can find somewhere else to drink.â
âDonât kick off,â Susie warned. âYou know what happened last time. Any more broken chairs and Julia will sack you.â
âI donât care.â
I stormed from behind the bar and charged over to Maria and Lorna.
âIs there a problem?â
Lorna was the first to answer. She was considered a big mouth around town and thought her hulkish frame, short hair, leather jacket and big mouth intimidated people. Well, it might some people, but not me. âGet the fuck out of my face,â she said, pushing me back.
No way was I standing for that, not in my own bar.
âLorna, donât,â Maria warned.
âIâm not scared of her. Iâll rip those tatty extensions out of her head.â
âExtensions! This is my real hair, not that youâd know anything about it looking the way you do, you big fat docker.â
Susie rushed out from behind the bar. âKara, please donât cause any trouble.â She was only small, petite with dark hair, but was always the nervous type.
âMaria, get that thing out of my bar before I drag her out by her hair.â
âThing,â Lorna shouted. âWho are you calling a thing?â
Maria remained silent.
âYou!â I said. âNow, get your big lard arse out of my bar before I throw you out.
