The president sat behind his massive desk in the Oval Office, and with a deep sigh, he closed the seventy-four-page dossier on the Cuban affair that Director Dan had prepared for him. He nodded to his secretary. “Okay, Candice, send in the director.”

“Yes, sir, Mr. President.” She rose from her seat, notebook in hand, and walked towards the door. The president studied her curvy body and licked his lips. Her slow saunter tantalized him, and no matter how many times he slept with her, he never tired of her perfect body. And her willingness to please him.

Out of all the positions he’d filled in his three years in office, from Supreme Court justices down to his personal barber, Candice was his greatest hire, well worth the extra hundred grand a year he paid her over and above her salary—out of his own pocket no less.

Director Dan stepped into the president’s office and stopped the president’s flashback of having sex with Candice.

He looked the Agency director right in the eyes and held them, as was his habit with everyone, getting straight to the point. “So what you’re saying here, Dan, is that a simple terrorist assassination, something we do many times around the world every day, has turned into a political firestorm because of a mole within the Agency? You have someone selling info to the Russians?”

“Yes, Mr. President. I had no idea that President Castro was anywhere near the village.”

“What about the military presence? Your field agents must have thought maybe they should abort the mission when they spotted the Cuban Army.”

“No, Mr. President, our field agents don’t abort missions. They make adjustments on the fly and complete the mission. It’s drilled into them in training and always reinforced in briefings. Failure is not an option, sir.”

The president sighed and shook his head. “You might want to revisit that policy before any future missions. But now’s not the time for that conversation. So, what now, Dan? We’ve got an international crisis with over fifty people dead, including a communist world leader. What the hell did you send to Cuba anyway? A team of ex-Navy SEALs?”

“No, sir, just one field agent. Agent Frankie Shelley. And she’s very good at what she does.”

“She killed all of them? Jeez, how much of a badass is this lady? I’d like to meet her.”

“I can arrange that, sir, but she’s not much for pleasantries.”

“Oh.” The president thought about whether his charm would work on her. He’d never slept with an assassin before. He smiled and got back on task. “So, how’d this happen, Dan?”

“We’re not sure yet, but we have every available source working overtime to get to the bottom of this, sir. We’ll find the mole and take care of him. As far as Congress, I’ll testify under oath. But I have nothing much to say. My statement echoes your comments to the international community. We’re not in the business of assassinating foreign leaders, and President Castro’s tragic death was as surprising to us as it was to the rest of the world.
