Chapter Nine

“Miss Zoe Zimmerman,” the tall dude in the tux announced as I walked through the doorway and onto the reserved mezzanine where I paused to look out over the crowded ballroom floor.

“Miss Celia Zarn of Fraess.”

Huh, Fraess must be the name of her homeworld. Wonder why the announcer guy didn’t say mine. Hmm, maybe because I was a half-breed?

I turned to where my roommate stepped through the doorway, the ragged strips of sun-yellow tulle wisping around legs in long jagged strips from the mid-thigh hem of her skirt down to where the complicated design of her sparkly sandal straps wrapped around her ankles. She smoothed her palms over the snug waist that set off her sleek curves and grinned at me.

“You look amazing.” And she did.

“Thanks. And look at you.” She gestured at me with her hand. “Was I right about the amethyst or what?”

I’d been worried about the low-cut lace dress with the thigh-high slit up the side, but after seeing the rest of the student body below, I was glad I’d trusted her. “Yes. And thank you.”

“Any time.” She giggled then linked her arm through mine. “What are fairy godmothers for?”

We descended into the throng. Music played, people danced and talked. Celia led me to the buffet tables filled with a vast array of foods—some I’d never seen before. Keep moving, Zoe. One foot in front of the other. Thankfully, we reached the far end of the tables, where we got ourselves glasses of punch which, mercifully, didn’t have anything swimming in it—yes, I checked.

As the evening progressed, I was introduced to what felt like every student and instructor and faculty member on campus. No way I’d remember all the names and faces, but I tried my best. And smiled so much, my cheeks ached.

Here I was, in the middle of a ballroom filled with a plethora of aliens. Who knew? Certainly not the rest of the people of Earth. And what would they think? I know I was finding myself a tad overwhelmed. I told Celia I was going to get another glass of punch, but really, it was just an excuse to take a moment to myself to catch my breath, settle my jangling nerves. I was so a fish out of my element.

I glimpsed brightly colored feathers amid the crowd. The meteorite girls. Yeah, steering clear of them.

“Ms. Zimmerman.”

I whirled around, spilling a few drops of punch. “Oh! Headmaster Steivis.”

He seemed taller than he had in his office, somehow. Maybe the vertical stripes of his aqua and navy suit made it so. And I tried hard not to
