“YOU DID good work,” Captain Harker told him. “You got confessions out of both of them, and they both described this third man. Unfortunately, it’s not much to go on. A vague description and a fake name.”

Wyatt nodded. “That’s true, but we also have his DNA.” He grinned as the captain looked up, expression skeptical.

“That’s quite a leap.”

“Neither of the suspects we have in custody smokes. I left cigarettes for both of them in easy reach. If they were smokers, they would have sucked one down quickly after a day with none. There were cigarette butts outside under the tree, and this Johnny liked to work outside. Did you also notice the first suspect’s description? I’m willing to bet that he was the boss there to see what they were doing. He didn’t want them to think too much of him, so he came in disguise. He was also the first one there on payday. I bet he was the one bringing the envelopes. It isn’t like they would just leave the money. He would also want to make sure things were working. And he smoked. The second suspect confirmed that.”

“I was wondering where you were going. But I see it now.” He smiled. “Have some of the cigarettes tested to see if we can get anything.”

“They have been prioritized already. But we have to have something to match it to. The problem is that we have little to go on at the moment. Mark and I are going to shake the trees to see if we can get any information out of anyone living in the area. I can’t rely on the lab to do all the heavy lifting, so we’re going back to basics.”

“Let me know what you find,” Captain Harker agreed, and Wyatt got back to work.
