Cassidy struggled to believe he was still alive. He’d been trapped behind a burned-out vehicle, with no place to go, waiting for the end. Until he made it into the house, accepted the surrender of the young Nazis, and even ‘deputized’ them into the US Army. Even in this crazy war, it was hard to swallow. And now Logan arrived. Things were looking up.

“Where’s the Lieutenant?”

The Sarge jerked his head toward the bombed-out factory. “He didn’t come with us, he’s back there with the Air Force Liaison Officer. The Airforce liaison officer who can’t liaise with Jack shit. His radio’s bust and he’s trying to fix it, but who knows?”

“We’re on our own?”

He nodded. “We’re on our own, and we need to prepare for the German counter-attack. When they come they’ll hit us hard, and we don’t have nearly enough men.” He glanced at the Hitler Youth. Can you rely on these kids?”

Ingrid supplied the answer. “The Nazis are kaput, Germany is kaput. Where else would we go? We want it to be over, so we can rejoin our families.” She smiled. “Besides, I have a distant cousin who is an American. His name is Steiner, Kurt Steiner, and his family emigrated to America in the last century. If I survive this war, perhaps I will meet him one day.”

I wonder. The name Kurt Steiner is common in Germany, something like John Smith in America. I guess anything’s possible.
