CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

There was a knock on Brooke’s door again far too early on a Saturday morning. Her eyes narrowed, thinking it could be no other than Finn. Yes, she was enjoying him, and yes, she wanted to see him far too often, but if she allowed him to come anytime he wanted, then she’d start to really need him. And that wasn’t something she could allow to happen.

She opened the door, ready to give him her full fury, though she was also ignoring the hint of excitement she was feeling in her stomach. A nice morning round of sweaty sex sounded better than yelling.

But her mouth dropped open when she saw a well-dressed woman standing at her door with her two best friends. And beyond them at the curb was a long black stretch limo.

“Um . . . hello?” she said as she gazed first at Sarah, then Chloe, and then the perfectly groomed woman.

“Hello,” the woman said. “I know this might seem strange, but my name is Bree Anderson. I didn’t change my name because I’m a daddy’s girl, through and through, though I’m head over heels in love with my husband.” She paused and laughed. “And I’m giving you far too much information you don’t want. But family means the world to me, and I hear you’re the future bride of my newest cousin, so I’m being nosy and wanted to meet you. I met your friends this morning at a planning meeting for the veterans facility, and I insisted we come over.”

Brooke’s jaw dropped. She couldn’t help it. She looked like a cartoon character. She was sure of it, but she couldn’t help it. This woman was beautiful, confident, and not shy at all. She was probably wearing clothes as expensive as Brooke’s car, but she seemed completely at ease on the doorstep of Brooke’s modest home.

“Are you going to let us in or stand there gaping like a fish?” Sarah asked with a laugh. “Trust me, I know how you’re feeling. I don’t think I said two words today at the meeting, but that’s something I’ll tell you all about later.”

“What meeting?” Brooke finally managed to ask.

Chloe was practically bouncing on her feet as she grinned at Brooke. “You’ll never believe what happened!” she practically squealed. “But we’re coming in to tell you the story.”

With that Chloe moved forward, followed by Sarah and Bree Anderson. It wasn’t until the door was closed that the opening part of Bree’s statement processed through Brooke’s brain.

“Wait!” she said, her voice a bit too high. All three women turned and looked at her, none of them saying a thing. “Did you say the person marrying your cousin?” There’d been so much information delivered in a single monologue Brooke was sure she’d heard wrong.

“Yep,” Bree said as she moved with ease into Brooke’s kitchen. “Do you mind if I have a cup of coffee?”

“Of course. I just made it,” Brooke said as she moved to her cupboard and pulled out three more mugs, then moved to the fridge and pulled out a pan of brownies she’d made the night before.
