Chapter 25

Commitment be damned

MASON

"Are you sure you don't want to come with us?" Blake asks, tying his shoe while I down the rest of my water.

We got back early from an evening lift where I pushed it a little too hard. I hung out with Lexi last night and all we did was actually watch the movie. Neither of us made a move, not even when the main couple was banging. I asked her more than once if she was okay and she assured me was.

I call bullshit considering she was fidgeting next to me all night.

“Yeah, I'm good," I reply, "I hate clubs.”

Blake and Noah are meeting Lexi and her roommates at a club along the beach and have been, unsuccessfully, trying to convince me all day to come along.

"Lexi’s going to look pretty hot,” Blake sings, attempting to persuade me.

If I know Lexi well enough, she won’t wear anything too risqué.

“She can do whatever she wants.” I mutter, opening the fridge for a wrap.

My stomach is thanking me for making two of them before practice.

Noah gives me a piercing look and shakes his head. "Why don't you just admit you have feelings for the girl?"

"I don't,” I lie, the words rushing out before my brain can filter them, “She's just a chick I bang."

"Whatever you gotta tell yourself,” Blake mumbles, rolling his eyes.

"What is that supposed to mean?" I snap, nearly throwing the plate of wraps.

“I watched you take her on a date twice this week and you two didn’t even make out last night. You haven’t put anything on the chart since you started hooking up with her. You’re becoming Natalie and Stephen, just own it.” Blake erupts.

“Absolutely not,” I deny. We’re not becoming a couple, especially under those pretenses. I’d tell her the truth before that would happen.

Noah sighs, waving his hand between the three of us, “You know it’s one thing to lie to yourself, but it’s another when you do it to us.”

“We don’t lie to each other. If we have these questions, you know she does too.” Blake adds, rubbing salt into the wound.

“She knows what we are and she’s cool with it.”

“Yeah? Then why haven’t you bragged about...” Noah starts before I cut him off.

“Because it’s between me and her and I don’t answer to you.” I retort, wanting this conversation to end. “Isn’t your ride here?”

His sets his jaw, his hands balling at his side when Blake lays a firm hand on his tense shoulder. “Seems like you need to start answering to yourself before you do to her.”

“I’m good with where I’m at.” I take a large bite of my wrap, ranch dressing pouring out of the back while they both sigh.

"Having an honest conversation would also soften the blow when she finds out you t.." starts Blake.

"Shut. Up." I bark, throwing my bottle of water at his head.

She doesn’t need to find out anything when it’s only for a semester.

"So you still haven't told her." Blake shakes his head and checks his phone.
