Chapter 14

“Good morning.” I smiled at Liam’s greeting over the phone.

I really liked waking up to the sound of his voice. “Morning.”

“We need to get started early today, it’s going to be a long one.”

“Is it?”

We hadn’t discussed plans the night before. I didn’t want to assume they would continue to spend time with us. Maybe Sophia had said something to Eli.

“Yes, we’re going to do a few of our favorite things, and tonight we have a surprise for you two.”

I waved my hand and got Sophia’s attention. She looked at me and I pointed to the phone. “You have a surprise planned for us?”

Her eyebrows shot up, so she didn’t know what was going on either.

“Yes. Meet us in front of the Museum of Modern Art at ten-thirty.”

We hung up and I caught up Sophia. “Ten thirty is an early start for them?”

I laughed with her. “I guess that’s college life. Maybe they were at rehearsal late.”

“Sure. We’ll at least we have time to get ready this morning.”

I agreed, but that was more time for me to think. Not something I wanted to do too much of since it usually led to worrying.

“Do you think he likes me?” As the words left my mouth, I wished I could take them back. How lame was I?

Sophia sat down on her bed and stayed silent.

I continued putting on my makeup like I wasn’t stressing out waiting for her to respond.

“My gut says yes, but I’m trying to stay as practical as possible. Also, I don’t want to give you false hope, so I’m not just saying yes to make you feel better.”

I let out a sigh and set down the eyeshadow brush I was using.

“I can’t tell if he’s being nice, or if…”

“Think about it this way, he wouldn’t have ever called you on the first day if he wasn’t at least a little bit interested. He wouldn’t keep calling you if he wasn’t still interested.”

“But he knows there’s a time limit. Maybe he’s just messing around for a few days. What if this is an experiment for class!”

“Okay, now you’re just freaking out. He’s not using this for class. The only other option is that he thinks he can…” She paused like she was thinking it through. “He can get something from you.”

She cringed like I wasn’t going to be okay with her words. I was fine. Until I figured out what she meant.

“Oh no.”

“That’s just one possibility, April. A guy that was only interested in that would have taken advantage last night. He wouldn’t be making plans to spend the day together. A guy like him wouldn’t have to try that hard.”

“What if I’m a challenge?”

She stared heavenward. “I seriously regret even mentioning this. It’s a small possibility, but it doesn’t make sense. He wouldn’t go through this much trouble.”

I let my shoulders fall. This was all unfamiliar territory. I never cared. Boys were always just for having fun with and hanging out. Now I knew what every other girl went through.
