At supper, Pop offered his usual prayer of “thanks for the food,” but he didn’t say “amen.” Just sat there, head bowed, for several minutes. Was he having a bad spell?

Rob shared a worried look with Drew, who shrugged and shook his head.

Then Pop let out a long sigh. “Lord, sometimes your mercy overwhelms me, particularly when I deserve it least. Thank you for putting Rob on the right road just when we needed him.” He chuckled softly. “And thank you that Emma and Julia liked their new cradles. Amen.”

Rob thought he might fall out of his chair. Shame started as a cramp in his belly and climbed clear up to his scalp until he felt like his head was on fire. Pop was so proud of those cradles he’d made, the one important job he could still do for the family. He would have wanted to deliver them as soon as possible, so surely the outing had been his idea all along. To think Rob planned to scold Miss Viola, maybe even fire her. Lavinia and even Robbie would have lost the only mother figure they had in this world. And he would have lost...he didn’t know what.

Just as Pop had said in prayer, sometimes the Lord’s mercy was overwhelming.
