Walking slowly through the field, I tossed handfuls of winter wheat seeds between the rows of corn hills, lamenting how bare the previous crop appeared now that weâd sheared all the leaves and silk from the stalks. It was for the best, though. The extra vegetation would help feed the animals through the cold season. I could also see better how many cobs had grown over the summer. Each plant boasted about three to five of the things, the grain taking its time in hardening. Noah had informed me that we most likely wouldnât pick any of it until after the first frost, when it would be sufficiently dry enough.
Glancing to my left, I watched as my employer did the same, carefully stepping between the rows, sowing the seeds. His wife worked beside him, the two of them talking together as they worked. On my right, a few paces away, Olivia did her share of the chore, the faintest hint of a song on her lips.
Smiling, I watched her for a beat, thinking of how wonderful a life like this would be with her. The thought had been ever present on my mind as late, as summer slowly turned toward fall. Augustâmy least favorite month, due to our shared namesâhad arrived in a somewhat chilly manner, and I found myself wondering just how much longer we would have together.
Despite Oliviaâs insistence that the Rebels would win this war, theyâd failed at several points over the last few months. Iâd never seen Noah so angry as when he heard the British had taken Fort Ticonderoga. There had been word of lost battles in New York as well, only furthering the desperation of the American Cause.
Surprisingly, I felt sad for them. The colonists wanted so desperately to claim the freedom they sought, but there was no way for them to do so. I knew, in the end, they would be beaten into submission. If there was a way for them to collapse without losing so much life, I would have preferred that route, personally.
Still, there were whispers that France would soon be joining the Cause, lending its aid to those who wished to see England fall. There was a Frenchman on this continent now, supposedly training the mess of men the Continental Congress called an army. Only time would tell if anything came from the action.
It was likely already too late to save the colonies, no matter how hard France tried to do so.
The beat of horse hooves drew all of our attention after a time, a rider appearing on the road from town. His face was grim as he dismounted and walked through the field toward Noah, two letters in his hand.
Emma, upon seeing them, grabbed her chest, her other hand going to her husbandâs arm.
Frowning, I realized what must be happening.
âWhat is it?â Olivia whispered, coming to stand beside me, her head cocked to the side as she watched the three of them confer.
âNoah is being called to serve with
